Boldman House Garden Assistant Job Description


The mission of the Boldman House Museum and Garden is to bring life to the family home of Gladys M. Boldman through restoration, conservation, interpretation, and education.


The Boldman House Museum Garden is first and foremost an instructional garden, with a mission to teach visitors about plant identification and gardening practices. The layout of the garden was carefully designed in 2002 by Frederick J. Lighter of Seattle’s Education and Environmental Consulting. The garden was designed to have areas of interest all summer long. Most plants selected are documented to be heirloom plant species introduced into American gardens prior to 1910.


The Garden Assistant’s primary responsibility is maintenance and upkeep of the Boldman House Garden under the direction of the Boldman House Garden Committee volunteers.

The Garden Assistant will work an average of 6 hours per week during the growing season. The Garden Assistant must be able to work independently on tasks given by the Garden Committee. They must be available to meet frequently with the Garden Committee. Working during our regular Wednesday morning work day is highly desirable.

This is a seasonal opportunity. The Garden Assistant will work March until the garden is cleaned up for winter, around the first week of October.

RESPONSIBILITIES including but not limited to:

  • Completion of basic garden tasks, such as weeding, dead-heading, planting, pruning, cultivating etc.
  • Surveying the garden for work that needs doing
  • Tidying up trash or tools that have been left out
  • Operating powered equipment, such as hedge trimmers and leaf blowers
  • Dividing and planting of perennials and annuals
  • Assisting with pruning or trimming of fruit trees, shrubs and hedges
  • Other duties as required



We seek a Garden Assistant who is inspired by our mission, with excellent people skills, including the ability to relate to others, strong communication skills, patience with others, and active listening skills.

  • Team-driven focus with accomplishing garden work and projects
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks
  • Ability to take and follow instruction
  • Successful candidates will have plant and weed knowledge
  • A gardening background is highly desired, but we are willing to train the right person.


This position is a physically active position. The Garden Assistant must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend at the knees and hips, and to lift at least 30 lbs. They must also be able to physically exert themselves for at least 3 hours, using heavy garden implements such as shovels and cultivators.


$15/Hour, 6 hours per week, March-October.
